Kongsberg Norcontrol IT has been awarded a contract to supply Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) with a new Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system for the Port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The new VTS system will be based on Kongsberg Norcontrol IT's Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) 5060 to provide a flexible, accurate and user friendly system for collecting, assessing and displaying vessel traffic data in real-time. Kongsberg Norcontrol IT has been appointed to deliver and install three VTS workstations for operator access to data and control system functions, three GMDSS workstations and sites, three CCTV sites, one AIS base station, and one radar for installation at the Port of Dar es Salaam.
The Port of Dar es Salaam enjoys a steady increase in throughput and is also an important transit port for neighbouring countries. With this high level of activity, the port acknowledged the need for a proven and robust VTS to be installed, to accurately represent vessel movements within the service area and to help ensure efficient turn-around times.
"In addition to achieving increased safety of all ships within the responsibility area, the system will also ensure security against piracy and robbery at the Dar port outer anchorage," says Eivind Solberg, Key Account Manager, Kongsberg Norcontrol IT. "The Kongsberg Norcontrol IT VTS solution will provide operators at the Port of Dar es Salaam with a surveillance and security system that provides an ultimate situational awareness tool."
"The contract with the Tanzania Port Authority is important," says Harald Østby, Vice President Sales & Marketing, Kongsberg Norcontrol IT. "Through our partnership with South Africa based Marine Data Solutions, which will handle onsite installations and service for the new Dar es Salaam VTS, we are now well positioned for further success in the African market," continues Østby.
The Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) was established on 15th April 2005 following the repeal of Tanzania Harbours Authority (THA) Act No. 12/77 and enactment of Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) Act No. 17/2004. The TPA currently owns, manages and operates all lake ports in Tanzania as well as ports on the eastern coastal region including Dar es Salaam, Tanga, and Mtwarga Ports.
