Full mission ship handling and engine room simulators
The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) has issued a contract to KONGSBERG for the delivery of a full mission ship handling simulator and a full mission engine room simulator configured to DNV class A standards.
Equipment package
In addition to the sophistication of the full mission bridge, the delivery comprises three secondary interactive tug bridges for certification of mariners in accordance with competency requirements established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). These bridges will include: the latest ARPA radars, IMO type approved electronic chart display information systems (ECDIS), automated identification system (AIS) training, and a comprehensive library of ports of Trinidad and Tobago as well as a suite of other high profile international ports. The delivery includes a wide array of ship models ranging from fishing boats to the world’s largest cruise ships. The Marine Training Centre has also acquired a full mission NEPTUNE engine room simulator. Engine room models include high speed craft, diesel/electric, and conventional diesel propulsion systems. UTT has also acquired a laboratory of student stations for advanced self study with both simulators.
Maritime Training
UTT has been successfully recruiting officer cadets, in both navigating and engineering disciplines, who commenced a two-year diploma programme in September 2005 at the university’s Maritime Centre. These UTT programmes deliver the knowledge required to obtain the Certificate of Competency as Officer of the Watch required by the STCW Convention that permits them to work on merchant vessels anywhere in the world. A full programme of other maritime courses will be available from the Maritime Centre of the UTT within the next two years.
About the University of Trinidad and Tobago
UTT was established in 2004 as a lean and dynamic, non-profit organisation, created in the form of a partnership between Government, Industry and highly respected regional and international Universities. UTT is divided into five centres—energy, manufacturing, maritime, processing and utilities and ICT.
UTT is building a Maritime Institute at Chaguaramas, a seaside suburb situated West of the Port of Spain, that will meet the maritime training needs for all sectors of the marine industry. The new facility is scheduled to open in May 2007.
