Propulsion Concept Engineer
Are you passionate about marine engineering and eager to shape the future of sustainable propulsion systems? We are now seeking a Propulsion Concept Engineer to join our Propulsion Concept Team. You'll play a key role in early-phase concept development for our propulsion products, including propellers, thrusters, waterjets, or other propulsion solutions, whether as standalone systems or part of integrated propulsion concepts.
In this role, you are responsible for delivering technical evaluations and performance estimates, working closely with designers, product owners, and internal stakeholders across R&D, sales, and engineering. Building strong relationships and connecting with diverse teams and contacts across multiple locations is key to your success. Maintaining a close partnership with the sales support teams for each product ensures our propulsion solutions are backed by solid data and fully aligned with customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform propulsion estimations and hydrodynamic evaluations to support early-phase concept development.
- Provide technical input during initial customer interactions.
- Collaborate with ship designers to ensure propulsion configurations align with vessel design constraints.
- Develop and improve internal tools and methods for propulsion estimation.
- Identify and clearly communicate limitations and uncertainties in estimation approaches.
- Stay up to date with industry best practices and emerging technologies in hydrodynamics and CFD.
What We Offer
We offer a collaborative work environment focused on innovation and technical excellence. You’ll contribute to develop future propulsion systems and sustainable maritime solutions, using advanced tools and working across disciplines and locations.
Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you should have a strong understanding of hydrodynamics and propulsion estimation, paired with a basic knowledge of ship design and its influence on propulsion performance. You have a solid understanding of marine mechanical systems and ship engine operations, combined with strong analytical skills and a hands-on, solution-oriented mindset.
Proficiency in technical analysis methods and familiarity with CFD software and its application in concept development is highly valued. You approach problems with an open mind, considering both conservative and alternative methods, and you communicate technical findings clearly and effectively to diverse stakeholders.
Location: To maintain close collaboration with our core engineering teams, this position is located at one of Kongsberg Maritime’s Nordic sites in Sweden, Norway, or Finland.
