Field Service Engineer - Merchant

The Field Service Engineer – Merchant provides technical service, maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning support for Kongsberg Maritime’s automation and propulsion control systems onboard merchant vessels. The role ensures reliable system performance throughout the vessel lifecycle and contributes to customer satisfaction, system integrity, and high-quality aftermarket support.
Key Responsibilites:
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on Kongsberg control and propulsion systems.
- Conduct onboard troubleshooting and diagnostics using engineering tools, software utilities, and electrical test equipment.
- Provide remote technical support through phone and email channels.
- Execute service assignments in accordance with customer requests and work orders.
- Read and interpret system drawings, automation architectures, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Update and maintain accurate as-built documentation after service activities or system modifications.
- Complete detailed service reports, timesheets, and expense submissions promptly following each assignment.
- Support configuration, parameter changes, and logic modifications for automation systems.
- Troubleshoot communication networks, including CAN, RS-232/422/485, TCP/IP, and related marine interfaces.
- Identify and resolve issues relating to AC/DC motors, power management, generator control, and governor functionality.
- Interface professionally with vessel crew, shipyards, and technical personnel to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Provide technical input to Aftermarket Sales and service leadership to support quotations and upgrade opportunities.
- Proactively advise customers about system enhancements, modernizations, and recommended upgrades.
- Follow company safety policies, quality procedures, and service standards.
- Participate in ongoing internal/external training to build technical competencies.
- Identify product improvement opportunities and communicate these to relevant internal teams.
- Support error-prevention initiatives in project deliveries and after-sales service.
- Willingness and ability to travel 50–70%, both domestically and internationally, sometimes on short notice and including occasional weekends.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related engineering field (or equivalent technical/military engineering training).
- 1–3 years of relevant experience in field service, commissioning, marine automation, propulsion control, industrial controls, or related technical environments (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Knowledge of electrical and electronic control system fundamentals, including PID controllers, communication interfaces, and signal processing.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documentation and engineering schematics.
- Experience troubleshooting low-voltage components using multimeters and diagnostic tools.
- Strong communication skills; fluent in English.
- Ability to work independently, including under time-critical or high-pressure conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PLC/SCADA architecture and marine automation systems.
- Experience modifying PLC logic or system configurations.
- Knowledge of marine/industrial communication protocols (Profibus, Modbus, TCP/IP, CANbus).

Work Environment
Work onboard vessels, in shipyards, and in industrial environments; may involve climbing, confined spaces, and extended periods offshore or at sea.
