The Hybrid Tug has the features that minimizes fuel consumption and emission in waiting/idle position, while maximises the Bollard Pull in Towing mode. The Kongsberg system offer an unrivalled operational efficiency, shifting automatically between the different operational modes to secure optimised services.
The Hybrid Systems from KONGSBERG are well proven in other maritime sectors and are now introduced to the Tug sector. Our US thrusters with ProDuct Nozzle for maximized bollardpull, with electric power through the Permanent Magnet Motor and connected to a rack of batteries that are charged from an automatic charging station at the dock, will reduce emissions from operations with up to 100% the savings due to no use of fossil fuels will bring operational cost down. In combination with a more remote operation that reduce the demand for crew will bring the OpEx further down, giving the operators a more competitive tool for operation.
The KONGSBERG Integrated Tug design includes critical systems to secure a a safe working platform for the operators. The Hybrid System, HY-TUG, gives the operator a vessel that can operate in a zero emission mode for most of its working time, only activating the main engine for the extra boost needed for the main towing operation.
Integration of our state of the art Propulsion units, Deck Machinery and Control and Safety Systems will reduce a number of cost elements for the TUG:
- Shipyard will save engineering hours, interface meetings, cabling and installation work, and over all reduce the risk in the project

“There have been a lot of operational benefits we didn’t expect with the hybrid propulsion system. The main engines are only being used for the main job and then shut off. There is an immediate response by the propellers, and the electric motors can slow everything right down to 1rpm for gentle operations, with the manoeuvrability proving to be really good. If conditions are too rough or windy, we can use the main engines. And everything can be done remotely, at the touch of a button, from the wheelhouse. After the immediate learning curve that comes with using new technology, we have found this system to be operationally really beneficial.”
