KONGSBERG develops Monitoring, Reporting and Verification application to meet new European environmental regulations
- New K-Fleet MRV application for Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Monitoring, Reporting and Verification enables shipping companies to comply with EU-regulation 2015/757
- This vital new solution is ready for installation before the August 2017 deadline
According to the 3rd IMO GHG study, Maritime transport emits approximately 1000 million tonnes of CO2 annually and is responsible for about 2.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Shipping emissions are predicted to increase between 50% and 250% by 2050 – depending on future economic and energy developments. This is not compatible with the internationally agreed goal of keeping global temperature increase to below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels, which requires worldwide emissions to be at least halved from 1990 levels by 2050 (Source).
The regulation, for ships exceeding 5000 GT and which call at any EU port regardless of flag or country of ownership, aims to quantify and reduce CO2 emissions from the shipping industry and demands that shipping companies have monitoring plans prepared by 31st August 2017. As per the new regulation, K-Fleet MRV enables monitoring and reporting of emissions on per voyage basis to, from and between EU ports, and is available for deployment now in new and existing K-Fleet installations.
By automating much of the CO2 calculations and report generation, K-Fleet MRV reduces the burden for crews to ensure that vessel's and fleets meet the requirements of the new regulation. The system combines data collection from on board sensors and manual entries, making it easier for events to be verified by the Master before reports are sent to the shore-office. K-Fleet MRV can be interfaced with other K-Fleet applications including K-Fleet Logbook and K-Fleet Maintenance, which provides for quality assurance of measuring equipment on board.
"With the established K-Fleet software suite as a platform, we have developed a straightforward, very easy to use solution that ensures shipping companies can comply to new mandatory requirements well before the deadlines," said Rune Kristian Stålstrøm, General Manager – Fleet Performance, Merchant Marine Division, Kongsberg Maritime. "In combination with K-Fleet's potential to help vessels and fleets to operate more efficiently through lower fuel consumption, K-Fleet MRV is an important development that will support the shipping industry to reduce its environmental footprint."
KONGSBERG's K-Fleet suite of Marine Fleet Management Software integrates diverse applications into a powerful system for ship management at the single vessel, fleet and shore-office levels. It is a modular software system designed to assist users' working processes within planned maintenance, inventory management, procurement, QSE, documentation, forms, certificates, voyage reporting and fleet operations. Built on an SQL platform, K-Fleet offers centralised and decentralised management functions and two-way data flow for fleets of all sizes.
