Jammertest 2026

Testing positioning technology where GNSS cannot be trusted

At Andøya in northern Norway, against a backdrop of steep mountains and endless ocean views, KONGSBERG recently participated in Jammertest 2026, an annual event that brings together industry, authorities and researchers to evaluate how positioning and navigation systems perform under GNSS interference.

For KONGSBERG, the event provided a unique opportunity to test the latest generation of Dynamic Positioning reference systems in realistic jamming and spoofing scenarios. While laboratory testing remains essential, field testing offers a different perspective by exposing systems to real operating conditions and unpredictable influences.

Bringing the latest technology into the field

To prepare for the tests, KONGSBERG equipped a test vehicle with multiple configurations of the latest generation DPS product line, combining different GNSS receivers and Controlled Reception Pattern Antennas (CRPA), including our own JRAS product. Throughout the week, the systems were subjected to a range of interference scenarios designed to challenge their ability to maintain reliable positioning information.

The objective was not only to evaluate system performance, but also to better understand how different configurations respond when GNSS signals become degraded, unavailable or intentionally manipulated.

Events like Jammertest allow us to move beyond simulations and controlled laboratory environments. Being able to test our systems under real jamming conditions provides insights that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Per Erik Kvam, Project Manager - Navigation and Positioning, KONGSBERG

"Testing in realistic conditions provides valuable insight into how our systems behave when GNSS is challenged by different types of interference, and it helps us continue improving the resilience and robustness of our positioning solutions", Per Erik continues.

Building resilience for demanding operations

Reliable positioning is essential for a wide range of maritime operations, particularly those relying on Dynamic Positioning systems. As interference with satellite navigation signals becomes an increasing concern globally, testing and validation activities have become more important than ever.

Jammertest offers an environment where participants can safely assess vulnerabilities, compare technologies and gather data that would be difficult to obtain elsewhere. The results help drive the development of more resilient navigation and positioning systems capable of operating in increasingly complex environments.

"The goal is not simply to see whether a system fails or succeeds," explains Kvam. "What matters is understanding the behaviour of the system, learning from the data, and identifying opportunities to make the technology even more resilient in future operational scenarios."

From testing to technology development

The data collected during Jammertest 2026 will now be analysed by KONGSBERG's navigation and positioning specialists. The findings will contribute to the continued development of Dynamic Positioning reference systems designed to support safe and reliable maritime operations worldwide.

By combining extensive laboratory testing with real-world exposure to jamming and spoofing, KONGSBERG continues to strengthen the resilience of the technologies that help vessels maintain accurate positioning when it matters most.
