Technologies for sustainable oceans

The Full Picture Magazine

Sustainability

Welcome to the latest digital edition of The Full Picture! Sustainability and the move to net zero carbon are capturing the attention of the world, and you’ll be able to read here about our commitment and the ways in which we’re demonstrating our leadership in this area.

Hydrogen is set to be the fuel of the future for many of the ocean's vessels and it’s a technology in which KONGSBERG is emerging as a global leader. Along with our partners on the HySeas III project, we’re testing a maritime hybrid drive train using hydrogen fuel cells.

This pioneering work is hugely exciting as it will lead to a design for the world’s first zero emission car and passenger ferries powered by this fuel source. We recount the highs and lows of our challenging and complex journey to develop this transformational technology.

With demand for container ships currently at record levels, we examine how our solutions can deliver efficiencies and sustainability benefits in today’s markets and help prepare the sector for a low carbon future.

Tougher regulations are powering a drive away from older, inefficient vessels into newer and greener ones. We explore how KONGSBERG’s integrated digital offerings such as Vessel Insight can help simplify, enhance access and secure data.

Our focus on the container ship market continues with a close look at the futureproofing offered by our innovative 2000 TEU open-top container feeder concept.

KONGSBERG also remains at the forefront of innovation in the global tug market. Here, too, we are developing powerful, efficient and cost effective vessels with novel hybrid propulsion solutions.

We report on the Delta Teresa tug operating in California and how its design brings major operational benefits as well as lower fuel consumption.

There’s also a focus on how KONGSBERG technology is bringing high levels of reliability, power and performance to a tug upgrading and investment programme by Shaver Transportation, a leading operator in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

Research is critical to the future of our oceans, and our unmanned surface and underwater vehicles will be used by scientists at the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research to boost its surveying capabilities. We tell the full story.

You’ll also be able to learn how KONGSBERG is working to develop, install and maintain AIS base stations that assist in developing, installing and maintaining around Svalbard in Norway. Challenges include extreme cold, powerful gales – and polar bears!

So, there’s a lot to read and enjoy in this issue. I hope you enjoy joining us on our exciting journey to sustainable change!
