EA640

Single beam echo sounder for full ocean depths

EA640 was a high performance hydrographic wide band single beam echo sounder for use in all water depths, from very shallow waters up to full ocean depths. EA640 supported transducers with frequencies from 10 to 500 kHz, The choice of transducer is the key to the range capability.

From Spring 2025 the EA640 as a separate system has been replaced by EK80. All the features for doing single-beam mapping of seafloor have been adopted in the EK80 software v25.3 and newer. This makes EK80 the perfect tool for mapping both the water column as well as the seafloor. There’s no longer a need to synchronise multiple systems. With an ADCP transducer, EK80 can also be used for collecting data on the ocean currents.

EK80 works well with the new ES18-11MK2 transducer. This transducer can be used from 10 to 30 kHz and is a direct replacement for the now obsolete transducers 12-16 and 18-11. Calculations show that the longest range is achieved if the transducer is operated at 14kHz, but the performance is also excellent at 12kHz, if that is preferred for instance for legacy reasons.

The old 38-7 single-beam transducer is also obsolete. A direct replacement, with significantly improved performance, is the ES38-7.

Since all the old low-frequency, single-beam transducers are now obsolete, the two-channel high-power WBT is no longer sold. It is replaced by the standard WBT that will give up to 2kW transmit power in a split-beam transducer such as the ES18-11MK2 and ES38-7. More information about the WBT can be found here.

When full split-beam capability isn’t needed, the split-beam transducers can emulate single-beam performance using an “emulated single-beam license”.
