Heave compensation
Compact, robust solutions for any operational platform requiring Active Heave Compensation (AHC)
From offshore cranes and gangways to winches, launch and recovery systems (LARS), dynamic positioning and jack-up vessels—KONGSBERG delivers high-performance AHC solutions that increase safety and extend the operational window.
Accurate data for demanding operations
AHC is vital for offshore crane and winch control systems. These systems rely on precise roll and pitch data from the crane tip, alongside real-time measurements of heave amplitude, velocity and acceleration. This enables safe and efficient lifting operations – even in challenging sea conditions.
How it works
Motion Reference Units (MRUs) measure roll and pitch at the mounting point and translate that motion to the crane tip. The winch control system then uses this data to adjust wire tension, keeping the load stable and unaffected by vessel movement.
The KONGSBERG advantage
Our MRUs serve as the “brain” of the AHC system. They generate the heave data used by control units to regulate electric or hydraulic motors that counteract vessel motion. These algorithms are engineered for reliability and precision.
KONGSBERG was the first to industrialise inertial sensor technology for offshore use. Replacing bulky, maintenance-heavy mechanical systems with compact, cost-effective digital solutions.
