What is Inertial navigation?

At Kongsberg Discovery, we’ve spent the past three decades mastering the science of inertia and applying that knowledge to develop market-leading navigation and positioning solutions.

Inertia is a subtle but constant force that affects everything and everyone, every day. First described by Isaac Newton in 1687 and later refined by Albert Einstein, it’s the foundation of how we understand motion.

Inertial navigation technology combines accelerometers and gyroscopes, sensors that detect movement and rotation, with advanced algorithms. These systems track every change in speed, direction and orientation, enabling accurate real-time positioning without relying on external references or satellite signals.

Wide product range

KONGSBERG has a wide selection of products and solutions that are either fully based on or that utilizes INS technology in some way.

With our wide range of models within all product categories, we are able to meet most needs and requirements. This gives us a unique possibility to combine technologies to create new products and solutions, but it also enables the customer to easily scale up when demands change.

Decades of experience, operational know-how and in-house technology expertise, combined with unique technology fusions, is our recipe for success.

Customer testimonial

"NOV has high-quality requirements for components used in our cranes. MRUs delivered from Kongsberg meet these demands in combination with very high precision. Kongsberg MRUs have always been extremely reliable. Components with this quality level have definitively contributed to NOV worldwide success with our subsea cranes."
