Local Hawk
Developing Autonomous Drone Swarms
Local Hawk is KONGSBERG's drone project, where students develop and test technologies for autonomous drones. In 2026, the primary challenge was enabling multiple drones to operate together as a coordinated swarm.
The project combines software development, autonomy, computer vision and practical testing. Students work on technologies such as person detection, navigation, autonomous decision-making and coordination between multiple drones.
A key part of the project is ensuring that algorithms and software perform reliably outside the laboratory. This means extensive experimentation, testing and iterative development on real hardware platforms. Students gain hands-on experience with the full development cycle, from software implementation and system integration to field testing and validation.
