Simrad scientific applications
The echo sounder has been used for fisheries research purposes for more than 70 years. This instrument is still today the standard tool for stock assessment of our commercially important fish resources.
These are only a few examples on how you can put Simrad's fishery research systems to use in scientific research.
Scientific applications
- Multifrequency operation for discrimination between fish species
- GPS Fish positioning system
- Hugin AUV
- Portable system for lakes
- Portable system for rivers
- Ocean Hub project (acoustic fence)
Echo sounder systems
The echo sounder has been used for fisheries research purposes for more than 70 years. This instrument is still today the standard tool for stock assessment of our commercially important fish resources.
The traditional use of the echo sounder is by transmitting the sound beam from the surface towards the bottom. Together with catch data from trawl, estimates are made of the fish abundance and fish size distribution. To discriminate between plankton and fish, or to provide information about fish species, two or more sound frequencies are used.
Sonars and catch monitoring systems are now becoming popular tools among scientists.
Sonar systems
Simrad's fish finding sonars are prepared with scientific outputs to provide data for analysis of fish schools, and parameters like distribution, volume, shape and behavior are relevant.
Catch monitoring systems
To compare and validate echo sounder and trawl data, catch monitoring systems are required to provide information about trawl position relative to the research vessel, trawl depth and speed, door spread, trawl catch, bottom contact etc.
