NOx and SOx emissions are reduced while operating costs are cut through the reduction of fuel consumption.

Hybrid upgrade solution completed within five weeks

Through a sophisticated hybrid power solution, KONGSBERG assists SEACOR Marine and MEXMAR in meeting strict environmental regulations. Both CO2, NOx and SOx emissions are reduced while operating costs are cut through the reduction of fuel consumption.

MEXMAR, SEACOR Marine’s joint venture in Mexico, operates a total of 18 offshore supply vessels. The Mexmar vessel SEACOR Maya was first in line for the hybrid solution with upgrade work being completed in the USA within five weeks. The delivery included supply and full integration of the energy storage system with a custom-designed Energy Control System (ECS), and the existing Dynamic Positioning (K-Pos DP-22) and Integrated Automation System (K-Chief 700 IAS).

The vessel was not only the first to be given the ABS notation ESS Battery Li, but also the first Hybrid PSV to deliver in the Americas, a significant achievement. Other Mexmar MMC 887 Class vessels will follow with the SEACOR Azteca, Viking and Warrior scheduled to convert when existing charter commitments allow.

SEACOR is also in the process of upgrading another similar vessel the UP Agate in the UK over the coming months along with an eight-vessel program in the Far East (with two vessels already delivered).

New functionality for improved safety and effectiveness

The overall solution adds safety and efficiency beyond conventional energy storage. The upgraded K-Pos DP-22 system functions include Power Load Monitoring and Blackout Prevention.

Moreover, the system displays all battery data including capacity and status, all of which support the operational continuity of SEACOR Maya and its sister vessels improving their ability to maintain position on DP even after a worst-case single thruster or power failure.

Core components of the system include Dynamic Load Prediction, Dynamic Inertia Control and Dynamic Hybrid Control combined with an automatic start/stop strategy.
