Classic Rudder

Providing an economical way of improving the manoeuvring capabilities of most vessels. The classical rudder utilizes full rudder area for manoeuvring.

The Classic rudder series, with no rudder angle limitation and optimised profile designs, provides an economical way of improving the manoeuvring capabilities for most vessels. This range of rudders is built as full spade rudders, with three different standard profiles, bulbous, medium, and slim. There is also no rudder angle limitation, to ensure optimal manoeuvrability.

The medium and slim profiles can be combined with a twisted leading-edge for improved efficiency and reduced cavitation risk. Furthermore, with few moving parts it is also easy to install and maintain. This ensures your vessel will have optimal reliability, excellent manoeuvrability, and low life cycle costs.

Classic Rudder Profiles

Classic Bulbous – For Lower Speeds

Classic Medium – For Medium Speed

Classic Slim – For Higher Speed

Classic Bulbous – For Lower Speeds
A bulbous profile and large vane end plates improve low speed manoeuvrability and ensure maximum lift force and high stalling angles. It shares the same profile as the FB flap rudder.

Classic Medium – For Medium Speed
A medium profile optimized to provide good maneuverability combined with propulsive efficiency, with a tapered or rectangular blade. It shares the same profile as the FM flap rudder.

Classic Slim – For Higher Speed
A slim profile increases overall propulsive efficiency and reduces cavitation risk. The blade is tapered with rounded corners. It has the same profile as the FS flap rudder.

For transit speeds, the directional stability of the vessel must be considered. We have developed and use advanced computer programs to simulate different manoeuvres such as the IMO criteria (zig-zag test), making it possible to evaluate different rudder sizes and types in order to optimise the rudder design for each vessel.

Support Types

Three different support principles:

  • Direct Trunk Support
    • In combination with the Direct Trunk Support, KONGSBERG rudder portfolio is unlimited in size and enables high manoeuvring and propulsion efficiency at all vessel sizes.
    • Aft Ship optimization
    • Improved performance
    • No rudder size limitation

  • Neck Bearing Support
    • Neck Bearing Support provides all vessels, whose size do not require Direct Trunk Support all the traditional rudder benefits.
    • Robust and well known
    • Simple and easy maintenance

  • Heel Support
    • Heel Pintle Support provides vessels all the traditional advantages of full spade rudder design with enhanced system stability.
    • Enhanced system stability
    • Durable in ice and protects propeller from foreign objects
