Meet Pål, who holds a vocational certificate in Polymer Composites:

Layer by layer – from fiber to defence

A chance visit to an industrial facility sparked his interest. Today, 24-year-old Pål builds missile components using advanced composite materials – and he thrives on the combination of high technology, varied tasks, and what he describes as the best work environment he’s ever experienced.

It was during an open day at Kongsberg Technology Park back in 2016 that Pål realised where he wanted to go. Seeing the industry up close left no doubt in his mind.

The following year, he applied to the composite materials program at Kongsberg Upper Secondary School – a unique vocational course offered exclusively in Kongsberg, and in high demand among students from across Norway. That path led to an apprenticeship at K-Tech and, later, a full-time position at Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

"I was incredibly happy when I got in. There are very few places in Norway – or the world – that offer composite training and experience at this level."

Transforming fiber into precision missile components

Pål works in what’s known as Lay-up – the crucial first step in manufacturing composite panels. Together with his colleagues, he carefully lays down layer upon layer of specialised fibers into precision moulds. This process creates the structural foundation for the components that will eventually become missile bodies.

"We build the parts from scratch. It’s millimetre precision – everything has to be just right. What we make has to withstand extreme forces and perform exactly as intended."

Although Pål is fully aware of the responsibility that comes with what he’s building, he doesn’t find the work stressful – quite the opposite.
"We have well-established routines and a strong culture of support. You’re never left to handle things alone – and that makes the job feel both safer and more rewarding.

For Pål, it’s the combination of cutting-edge technology and a great work culture that makes the job so rewarding.

"I get to work with advanced technology and be part of something that truly matters – all while enjoying myself and spending time with great colleagues.

Honestly, it’s a really cool job."

He describes the work environment as the best he’s ever experienced.
"I’ve never experienced anything like it. We’re a diverse group – all ages and backgrounds – yet incredibly close-knit. It’s easy to feel included, easy to enjoy your work, and there’s room for both focus and friendly conversation. The days fly by – and I genuinely look forward to coming to work."

Ambitious for the future – and fully supported

After five years in a full-time position, Pål has applied to the technical college (Fagskolen) to pursue leadership training – and feels fully backed by KDA.
"Both my manager and HR gave me their full support. It’s easy to combine work and studies, and it’s clear the company truly wants its people to grow."

He’s already completed courses in project management and envisions a future in leadership – or in another challenging role within the company.

The great thing about working here is the amount of opportunity. You can change departments or switch roles – it almost feels like starting a new job every time. I have no plans to leave the company anytime soon.

When asked if he would recommend vocational training and a career in industry, Pål doesn’t hesitate:

"Absolutely. You start working early, you earn a salary, gain real experience – and your days actually feel meaningful. A lot of my friends who went the bachelor’s or master’s route are envious. Some even regret it. I don’t."
