Share: NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS)

The Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) System is an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) system to be designed and built for NATO by a multinational industry team that includes KONGSBERG.

KONGSBERG develops and delivers an integral part of the AGS ISR system, namely the AGS System Master Archival/Retrieval Facility (SMARF). AGS SMARF will provide the centralized long-term data storage, archival, management, search and retrieval services of NATO ISR Data and derived information.

The NATO AGS Core capability will enable persistent surveillance over wide areas in any weather or light condition using long-endurance, unmanned air platforms (UAVs), operating at very high altitude and at considerable stand-off distances.

The NATO AGS Core capability will be a very efficient tool in support of peacetime Disaster and Humanitarian Relief, UN missions, Crisis Response, Environmental Events etc., as well as in NATO Article V events, Blockades etc., as it will provide In-depth knowledge/understanding of situation or entity.

AGS has 5 UAVs of the type RQ-4 Global Hawk, each carrying advanced radar sensors, navigation and communication systems, continuously detecting and tracking moving objects throughout the observed areas, as well as providing radar imagery (resembling photographs) of areas and of stationary objects. NATO operators and intelligence analysts may view the situation in real-time situation awareness. The ISR Data is stored in huge data archives and can be retrieved to analyse and understand past events or to predict future events as well as long-term trend analysis and forensics.

Northrop Grumman ISS International, Inc. (NGISSII) is prime contractor for the AGS system and KONGSBERG is a first-tier supplier to NGISSII.

The KONGSBERG developed AGS SMARF will enable access to and dissemination (distribution) of both real-time and historical data in support of decision-making for users throughout NATO. All 28 nations may be given full use of AGS for international operations as well as for their national ISR.

AGS SMARF will store and handle several Petabytes of data! (Several “10 to the 15”, or 1015 bytes!).

The data stored will primarily originate from the AGS system, but will also include data from interoperable NATO and National systems. All data collected through NATO AGS “life time” (20 years of service!) may be stored.

The AGS SMARF will be a key enabler for the emerging NATO JISR capabilities (beyond the current Coalition Shared Database (CSD) and offers flexibility and growth potential in support of current, emerging and future needs.
