Health Management

by KONGSBERG

Holistic equipment monitoring service for reducing risk of asset ownership

Health Management allows continuous appraisal of equipment condition, for all equipment critical to a customer’s operations, improving maintenance planning and minimising operational disruption.

Case Study

The crew of the vessel Kvitbjørn were experiencing problems with the shaft generator, a critical machine providing power generated by the Bergen Gas Engine to the ship. KONGSBERG was asked to provide the Health Management service to continuously monitor the machine.

  • After a short time, the Health Management service determined that the shaft generator bearings were wearing at an abnormally high rate, and that the source of the problem could be traced to a leakage in the electrical supply causing erosion on the bearing surface. The problem could be avoided by replacing the bearings with a type not affected by such an electrical leakage.

With the Health Management experts monitoring the situation the vessel could continue operating undisturbed. In the meantime, the replacement bearings were ordered and a maintenance intervention planned for a time least disruptive to vessel operations.

Rather than experiencing a sudden and unexpected bearing seizure and catastrophic generator breakdown, the bearings were replaced without incident and operational disruption kept to a minimum.

In the words of the vessel operator’s general manager Tom Vetrhus:

“The Health Management service from Kongsberg Maritime was instrumental in preventing critical equipment breakdown, helped us plan our service intervention in advance and minimised disruption to our operations.”

Enhancing asset availability; maximising your revenue; reducing your cost

Health Management supports our customers in two key ways; firstly it can help optimize planned maintenance, and support a customer’s Condition-based Maintenance strategy, ensuring the vessel is in operation when equipment condition allows and enhancing revenue.

Secondly, Health Management can help to reduce unplanned maintenance and therefore the risk of equipment failure occurring, helping to reduce the cost of the customer’s asset as well as enhance predictability. This can, for example, aid in improving a vessel’s insurance rating, over time leading to reduced premiums

Real-time equipment health status for crew

Crew receive condition status of vessel equipment, flagging any anomalies and allowing crew to make necessary decisions to maximise vessel availability and operation, allowing crew to make necessary decisions to maximise vessel availability and operation. It is available on any on-board connected device such as computer or tablet and is presented on a simple and intuitive interface which can be tailored to customer requirements and equipment.

On-shore portal enabling further vessel and fleet analysis

All data collected is encrypted before being transmitted onto a Kongsberg Maritime-hosted web portal on shore, where more detailed analysis can be carried out. Management can view near- real- time equipment health status in multiple viewing modes. Equipment anomalies are flagged and trend analysis of selected equipment can be used to evaluate and optimise maintenance plans.

Equipment supported by Health Management

Today, Health Management is offered for the following equipment:

  1. Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines
  2. Kongsberg Maritime and third party rotating machinery
  3. Kongsberg Maritime low-pressure deck machinery

Leveraging highly scalable technologies

Health Management leverages Vessel Insight as an end-to-end platform for secure collection, transfer, storage and analysis of ship data.

Large data sets are analysed on the Kognifai cloud platform using Machine Learning and passed to Experts-in-the-Loop who provide targeted recommendations and feedback to the operator and vessel crew to minimise operational disruption, and plan maintenance intelligently.

Seamless integration with Kognifai Maritime Ecosystem

  • The Health Management service is delivered via a web-based application, seamlessly integrated with Vessel Performance. This allows customers to view vessel-level key indicators of performance (via Vessel Performance), and drill down to view the state of the machinery (via Health Management) that may be adversely affecting this performance.

  • The Health Management service is also fully compatible with the Kongsberg CMA suite of vibration measurement tools and applications, allowing monitoring of rotating machinery such as thrusters, shaftlines, generators and motors.
