Digitalization – conquering complexity for more sustainable and greener industries

A great many things are complex. In tackling climate change, the pandemic or the global economic and political situation, complexity is a common denominator. It can be challenging to face it on such a massive scale while keeping up with everyday struggles. The urge to simplify is potent, into good and bad, smart and stupid, black and white. But jumping to one or the other polar opposites without the proper insight only makes things easier in the short term. In the long term, we will not be able to solve challenges if we succumb to the urge of simplifying without understanding, by ignoring difficulties, using smoke and mirrors or being arrogant. Instead, we believe in knowledge, dialogue, experience and have a deep interest for solving problems by fully understanding them. The ultimate way to vanquish complexity is to take it on, to shed light on what is in the dark. And at Kongsberg Digital, we relish in the task.

What digitalization is all about – more complete and perfect information

If deep understanding is key to solving complexity, using data is a no-brainer. Today, data is generated and collected at unprecedented levels, from sensors, equipment, information services and numerous other sources. But having millions and millions of data points without the code to understand it is just confusing. It is only when the interconnectedness of data is systematically and contextually understood, that we can use it for specific purposes. This is what digitalization is all about. With data as raw material, code and computing power as tools, and domain knowledge tying it all together, we take the vast and complex and crunch it into systems and solutions that are easy to use in daily operations. With as close to perfect information as possible about assets and operations, customers are in a unique position to decide what goals they want to optimize for. Perhaps not shockingly, most of them want to improve their efficiency, collaboration, safety and, not least, the sustainability of their operations.

Vessel Insight is a vessel-to-cloud data infrastructure ensuring that customers can capture and aggregate quality data from their fleet in a cost effective and secure way. By collecting and contextualizing data from ships, you can start using applications that are tailored to various needs, like  optimizing performance, route planning, logistics and maintenance, resulting in a safer journey and reduced emissions.

An example for this is our Vessel Performance application that provides vessel efficiency and performance information that enables the ship to comply with IMO and EU regulations (Marpol, SEEMP, EEOI, MRV). It eases the regulatory process via automated logging of data and extraction for verification and reporting. Vessel Performance is designed with future regulations and reporting in mind. This is just one example, however. Connecting vessels to cloud and enabling data to be used in applications is the foundation for modernizing and optimizing the way maritime operations work. Because the Vessel Insight ecosystem is open and secure, it allows for application developers all over the world to contribute with their solutions. OEMs are invited to partner with Vessel Insight so that the ecosystem across grows rich, and so far DNV GL, ABB, MAN and MacGregor have signed on. This collaborative approach will increase the richness of the ecosystem around Vessel Insight and accelerate the availability of solutions meant to bring about more sustainable, safe and efficient operations.

Kongsberg Digital is also a provider of advanced simulation systems for maritime education, training and studies. Our wide range of simulators enables educational institutions to provide efficient and realistic training of students and crew. This is a more sustainable approach compared to having recruits conduct all their training out at sea. It also allows for much more training digitally than what would be feasible physically. This training builds vital skills that promotes safety, cost-efficiency and sustainability in operations at sea.

Our Kognitwin Energy solution – a dynamic digital twin - establishes a dynamic virtual representation of an asset and its behavior by continuously updating integrated information, reflecting the status of the facility in real time. In addition, with the full scale dynamic digital twin, Kongsberg establishes end-to-end operational insights across disciplines, remove bottlenecks in operations and leverage digital technologies for optimization. KONGSBERG has heavily invested in high-fidelity dynamic simulators or physical models, which enable accurate simulation of process data combined with real-time and historical data, enabling advanced machine learning, AI and higher levels of autonomy. The Kognitwin Grid solution - a digital twin service for the grid operators – gives them the tools needed to excel in the new power system reality - enabling and accelerating the energy transition​. With increased electrification and new and unstable power producing entities, like solar and wind, connecting to the grid, balancing becomes a challenge. The traditional way to ensure the grid can handle heavy loads based on consumption (imagine an entire neighborhood charging their electric vehicles at 5 PM) would be to build the grid with bricks and mortar for power consumption peaks. But that means that for 23 hours every day, the grid is vastly over dimensioned. The much smarter and more efficient thing to do than continue building for increasing energy needs would be to create digital tools that can help operators balance the grid, for instance by nudging people to use electricity when consumption and prices are low. The Kognitwin Grid is this tool, helping operators transform to a smart grid solution rather than being stuck with outdated traditional systems.
